NYS DOL says apprentices earn a paycheck while learning through on-the-job training and related classroom training. You must be 18, or 16-17 with parental approval. Training lasts one to six years depending on the trade. Two pathways: recruitment into a NYS Registered Apprenticeship (if you meet the program's requirements) or a 'Direct Entry' program that builds the skills needed to qualify. Training is usually offered by the sponsor at no cost to the apprentice, with rare exceptions the page describes. Most programs require a high school diploma or equivalent; some require specific courses, experience or physical ability. Search openings in the NYS Job Bank or contact your local apprenticeship office; contact email published on the page.
