Michigan describes Reconnect as a last-dollar scholarship that pays for you to attend your in-district community college tuition-free, or gives a large discount at an out-of-district college. As stated, you must be at least 21 when you apply, have lived in Michigan for at least a year, have a high school diploma, equivalency or certificate of completion, and not already have an associate or bachelor's degree, plus meet residency rules. Steps: apply online, apply to a Michigan public community college, submit the FAFSA, and enroll in a Pell-eligible skill certificate or associate degree. The state says you can keep using it until you earn an associate degree or reach four years from your first Reconnect semester.

Ways to get started listed by the state: look for a MARC-endorsed pre-apprenticeship program, contact your local Michigan Works! for guidance, search Registered Apprenticeship openings on Pure Michigan Talent Connect or the federal Apprenticeship site, or complete the state's Registered Apprenticeship Interest Form. LEO notes some programs require an entrance exam such as the ACT WorkKeys, and that many are approved for GI Bill benefits for veterans.
